How May I Help You?

Tuesday, March 2, 2010 by Andrea Cohn

I ask that question so many times every day as a librarian at Harrison College (formerly Indiana Business College)! When I started this job at the Fort Wayne College just seven short months ago, I had no idea how much daily interaction I would have with the students and faculty on-campus --- and no idea how much I would love getting to know them and watch them grow as they work towards a degree in Medical AssistantBusiness Finance, Criminal Justice, or whatever Career Advancement path they have chosen at this point in their lives. I know that what I am doing is helping them take a step in the right direction.

And the best part is that I get to have FUN while I do it. Someone asked me this morning if I liked being a librarian. I said, "Absolutely! People think I'm a genius because I get to look up all of the answers. It's like being Alex Trebek!" I love working at Harrison because they care enough about their students to hire an accredited librarian at their campuses who can work individually with their students to make sure they are getting the resources they need, when they need them.

I go into the classrooms to make sure the students are being taught the Information Literacy skills they will need to be successful in the college careers, and in life. And the administration has invested in a network of librarians and on-line services (databases, e-books, journals, on line reference) to ensure success both on line and on campus. No wonder Harrison College was voted one of Indiana Best Places to Work!

Why We Advertise?

Monday, March 1, 2010 by Ashley Smith

Ever wonder why colleges use advertising? Isn't it easy to pick the right college?

Find one you’ve heard about; go through admissions; and begin your collegiate career... Right?

Well it’s not that easy. It’s been reported that 1 in 4 college freshmen will drop-out of college before completing their freshman year. Why is this you might ask? Most of the time students drop out because they started off at the wrong institution in the first place. That’s why is so important that institutions like Harrison College advertise and inform prospective students about their benefits.

So what are some of the benefits about Harrison College that we want to message out?

A Long History. In a world where many claim to be an expert, it’s comforting to know about a school that’s truly been a leader for more than 100 years.

Personal Support. We work with students one on one to help them reach their goals, from choosing a field of study to providing Career Development Assistance

Financial Aid. We’ll help devise the best plan to finance education – almost all

Harrison College students receive some form of college tuition assistance.

A Variety of Studies. We offer more than 30 programs in a wide variety of career fields in

business, criminal justice, health sciences, information technology and veterinary technology training.

Those interested in culinary arts or hospitality may learn at The Chef’s Academy.

Smart Choices. We develop our programs based on input from business leaders and research of industry growth trends to ensure that they offer strong career potential.

Career-Focused Degrees. Classes will center on selected areas of studies, period.

It’s all students need – and only what they need – to get the job they want.

Day, Evening & Online Classes. Students can enjoy flexible class schedule, including the ability to combine a distance learning college with varying levels of face-to-face, in-class instruction. Part-time and full-time study options offer even more convenience.

Multiple Campuses. We’ve strategically located our campuses to make it a reasonable commute for most anyone.

Lifetime Employment Assistance. We’re with our students every step of the way, providing guidance on writing cover letters, building resumes, interviewing, and starting great careers.

These attributes just name a few reasons why we advertise about the great opportunities that come with being a part of Harrison College.

Check out one of our commercials to see how we advertised our Long History attribute!

At Harrison College, the Goal Comes First

Saturday, September 19, 2009 by Kay Newton

groupThe goal comes first…..

Lou Tice teaches us that “the goal comes first, and then you see.” Students at Harrison College learn this lesson early in their first quarter classes when they participate in the Strategies for Success course. Lou gives us many mantras in that course, but none so significant as this one. The goal comes first……

Elkhart College students recently put this statement into action through the creation of vision boards. As we worked through the Strategies course, we learned the principles of I x V = R, words trigger pictures trigger emotions, and developing SMART goals that are then put into action by positive, first-person, present-tense affirmations. The end results for us were beautiful, affirming, emotional vision boards, such as you see here.

Students are enrolled in a variety of career programs: business finance, business marketing, careers in medical assistant, criminal justice careers, and medical reimbursement specialist careers. However, they all share the common vision of graduating from Harrison College and becoming successful, skilled, employees in their chosen career.  Beyond that, their visions incorporated such things as marriage, ocean-front retirements, financial security, luxury vehicles, travel, and generally peace of mind and achievement.

Students commented that this was a powerful exercise for them. By focusing on their goals (vision), they were able to create affirmations (words) that elicited great emotion when they were combined with their visuals presented on their boards. We laughed, got teary-eyed and choked up at times, as the students presented their visions to their classmates and shared their dreams.   Lou asks us to “dream big,” and this project brought out some of the biggest dreams one can imagine!

Harrison College helps students DREAM BIG! We also help students create that path to realize their dreams. Come join us at Harrison College. Let us help YOU create your path to your dream.

Muncie Indiana College-A Branch on the Harrison College Family Tree

Saturday, September 5, 2009 by Jeanni Urbahns

I am not sure if I have ever really shared this with anyone, but I truly do feel like Harrison College is a second home for me and the people who work here are my family.  I have been a student, a student worker, and an employee at the Columbus Indiana college campus. I have worked in collaboration with many of the other employees from our campus locations around the state and within our distance learning college.  It was no surprise to me that Harrison College, formerly Indiana Business College, was listed on the Indiana Best Places to Work list two years in a row!

Harrison College Muncie Indiana College Campus Staff and Faculty
Today I want to give a big shout out to the Harrison College Muncie Indiana college campus.  Our Muncie campus offers degree programs through our schools of Business, Health Sciences, and Criminal Justice. With a student body 230 people strong, the focus of the Muncie campus is just like that of my own campus—STUDENT-CENTERED EDUCATION AND SERVICE.

Muncie also offers flexible class schedules, day and evening classes, and even online course options. Students at the Muncie Indiana college campus enroll in the adult education programs in search of career development assistance and career advancement that often comes along with a college degree.

As an Indiana accredited college, Harrison College (all 14 ground locations and our distance learning college) takes pride in providing students with the education and hands-on training they need to succeed in the job market today.

I feel safe to say that even though it is 103 miles away from where I sit right now, if you stop by the Harrison College Muncie Indiana college campus, you will greeted with a smile, given useful information, and treated with respect—not because I sent you there, but because that is just the way we do it!

Professional Vertigo Sends Adults on Search for More Education

Friday, August 28, 2009 by Jeanni Urbahns

At one time or another, I think that many of us suffer from what I like to call “professional vertigo.”

Vertigo is a condition often associated with a sensation of dizziness, confusion and a disoriented state of mind. In the ever changing world that we call “business,” it is not uncommon for our jobs to cause these same sensations. I started thinking about all of the different businesses having to make staffing changes during the economic downturn.

If asked, I believe that admissions teams at many of the Indiana accredited colleges, would agree that adult education programs have seen an increase in enrollments due to professional vertigo.

Jackie Griffith, Admissions Representative at Harrison College and graduate of Indiana Business College, explains it like this, “As the economy changes, so do the jobs. In order to stay employed or perhaps find a new job, people are finding it necessary to go back to school to earn a college degree or update a degree earned years before.”

“So many of the adult students I meet with are in need of some type of career development assistance because they now find themselves with new responsibilities in their current job or in need of finding a new career position,” adds Gina Pate, Director of Admissions at the Harrison College Columbus Indiana college campus.

Griffith is quick to add, “Those I talk with seem to understand that the key to surviving this economy is the ability to adapt and evolve. They know that in order to stay successful or to be successful in a new career, finding a college for working adults is the best way to have a competitive edge.”

If you find yourself suffering from professional vertigo, take a deep breath, relax and call Harrison College. Offering degrees in Health Care Management to Fashion Merchandising courses—from Criminal Justice to Veterinary Technology training—Harrison College has something for everyone!

21st Century Scholar Program-Helping Families Pay for Education

Monday, August 17, 2009 by Jeanni Urbahns

Across Indiana students began returning to classes this past week. As I ran from school to school with my children--making sure we hit every open house, all I could think was—Is it possible that summer has gone by so quickly?

While touring the school with my son who is starting 8th grade this year, I met Carrie. Carrie is a Student Coordinator for the Twenty-first Century Scholars program.  The program started in 1990 as a way to encourage students from low to moderate-income families to pursue a college education.  Students who qualify and complete the Twenty-first Century Scholars Program receive financial assistance to pay for or help pay for tuition costs when they enter college. Enrollment in the program is open to students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades.

Eligibility is based on household income at the time when the enrollment form is completed. As a Twenty-first Century Scholar, the student makes a pledge to do the following things:

  • Graduate with an Indiana High School Diploma from a charter school, freeway school or other Indiana school recognized by the Indiana Department of Education

  • Achieve a cumulative high school GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale

  • Not to use illegal drugs or alcohol, or to commit a crime

  • Apply for admission to an eligible Indiana college, university or proprietary institution as a high school senior

  • Apply on time for state and federal student financial aid

Harrison College is recognized by the Indiana Department of Education and works every year with students participating in the Twenty-first Century Scholar Program. You will still find us on the list of Eligible Indiana Colleges, Universities and Proprietary Schools as Indiana Business College.

To find out if your child qualifies, visit the State Student Assistance Commission of Indiana page for full details. If you would like to speak with someone near you about the program or if you would like to complete an enrollment form, click here to see the contact information for your local Support Site.

Twenty-first Century Scholars are currently pursuing degrees in medical assistant, veterinary technology, criminal justice, and business management. Past Scholars are already working in help desk careers and business marketing careers. Don't put off enrolling in this program any longer. The ten minutes you spend now completing the enrollemnt form could save you thousands of dollars when your child is ready to go to college.

Top 5 Harrison College Questions Asked at the Indiana State Fair

Thursday, August 13, 2009 by Jeanni Urbahns

Earlier this week, I went to the Indiana State Fair and had the opportunity to be a part of the Harrison College booth. What fun that was! I was excited to talk with people from all over the state as they stopped by to see who we are and what we are all about. While we were talking I began to see that there were a few questions that seemed to be the most common.

So, here are the top 5 Questions Asked at the Indiana State Fair!

Q:  “Where is Harrison College located?”

A:  Harrison College is everywhere! We are as close as next door throughout Indiana in Elkhart, Muncie, Anderson, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Columbus, Terre Haute, Evansville, and Lafayette. We are excited about our newest campus in Columbus, Ohio—the first ground-campus we have outside of the state of Indiana. And we are available INTERNATIONALLY via our distance learning college. Many people have known about us for 107 years—but they knew us by the name Indiana Business College—and as you can see, we are not just in Indiana anymore.

Q:  “What kinds of degrees do you offer?”

A:
Many people are surprised that we offer both Associate and Bachelors degrees. We offer high quality instruction in small classes or via online college courses. Our students earn degrees in Accounting, Business Marketing, Business Management, Criminal Justice, Vet Tech, Medical Assistant, Network Administration, and Massage Therapy just to name a few. For a complete list, just click here.

Q:  “Will my credits transfer to Harrison College?”

A:
They may! Just like all colleges, we would have to review your credits to see if the course you have completed covered the same material as the courses we teach. We will also look to see if you had the required grade for credits to transfer and that the credits are not over 10 years old. Now, here is where we differ from other colleges—we do this HAPPILY!

Q:  “Is Harrison College accredited?”

A:
YES! We are nationally accredited through Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) and recognized by the Career College Association (CCA).

Q:  “Do you have any student like me?”

A:
YES!  I always want to laugh when someone asks me this because that was maybe the biggest question that I had when I enrolled at Indiana Business College at almost 30 years old. It really doesn’t matter what age you are, if you have a high school diploma or a GED, if you work full time and have a family or if you are enrolling right out of high school—THERE ARE PEOPLE JUST LIKE YOU ATTENDING HARRISON COLLEGE!

Choose a program of study

Thursday, August 6, 2009 by Kristie Williams
Which program is best for you?

We hear these words everyday... "diploma, certificate degrees, associates degree, bachelors degree.." but what do they mean?

I am going to go over these different terms so you can understand what they are and which one is the best fit for you.

Diploma/Certificate- Less than two years, usually less than 20 classes, programs include medical office assistant, office assistant, accounting assistant, and more.

Associates Degree- Typically a two year program, approximately 20 classes, programs include accounting, fashion merchandising, criminal justice, veterinary technology, business and more.

Bachelors Degree- Typically a four year program, approximately 40 classes, programs include accounting, criminal justice, health care management, hospitality restaurant mangement, and information technology.

Advanced Degree- Masters or Doctorate. These programs will teach you beyond a bachelors degree.

*The programs listed are not the only programs offered in those areas of study.

For more information, please contact your local campus and ask to speak with an admissions representative.

"Eat my dust" at Harrison College - Elkhart

Sunday, August 2, 2009 by Kay Newton
chalk journals
Chalk dust, that is. There's something about writing journal entries in chalk that just brings it all home! That's just what Christy Waterman's Accounting I class did last week. But instead of using chalk on the chalkboard, students cranked it up a notch and took their chalk-writing and accounting skills outside to the parking lot for a little bit of journalizing.

This is just one example of many of the innovative and interactive methods used at Elkhart College to enhance student learning. Our business career majors especially love to partner with their instructors in interactive learning. From chalk-writing journals, to designing board games for review sessions, to building houses from a deck of cards, business, criminal justice and medical assisting students all benefit at Harrison College when these and similar techniques are employed. acctg 2

Harrison College IS your college of choice when it comes to creativity, innovation and interactivity. Did you know that you retain 90% of what you say and do when you are actively engaged in an activity? That goes for learning, too! What better reason for enrolling in Harrison College than to enhance your chances of success in your career field!

Come "play" with us and learn with us! You'll be glad you did!  Harrison College, and specifically Elkhart College campus would love to have you join our team!  Visit us today at www.harrison.edu.

Harrison College is proud to announce the addition of the Human Resources Degree program at the Columbus Indiana college campus. Enrollments are being accepted now for the September 28, 2009 quarter start. This Associate Degree program is designed to train students in various key processes and services for careers in Human Resources departments.

Although new to the Columbus, IN campus, the Human Resources Associate Degree program has experienced success at six campuses across the state and nationally via Harrison College Online, a distance learning college.

As with all degree programs at Harrison College, graduates of the Human Resources Program will be provided with career placement assistance and will also qualify for our tuition freeze program which allows for a student’s tuition to remain the same throughout the completion of their degree with Harrison College. Financial aid is available to those who qualify.

The goal of Harrison College is to train students in preparation for today’s jobs. This means making efficient use of student’s valuable time by training on state-of-the-art equipment as well as receiving quality education from instructors with experience in the field. It also means students receive the proper training to secure employment in the shortest time possible.

Harrison College is a nationally accredited institution dedicated to excellence in higher learning.  With a concentration on career-focused education, the college grants Associate and Bachelor Degrees. Students may earn a degree by attending one of 12 campuses throughout Indiana, or the newest campus located in Columbus, Ohio, by taking classes 100% online, or a combination of classroom and online learning. Students may choose degrees from the Schools of Business, Criminal Justice, Health Sciences, Information Technology, and Veterinary Technology as well as the college’s culinary division, The Chef’s Academy. Harrison College, formerly Indiana Business College was founded in 1902.

Keep your eye on the prize

Monday, July 27, 2009 by Elizabeth Nichols
According to John Maxwell, "A great leader's courage to fulfill his vision comes from passion, not position."

Life is full of challenges, yet we still have dreams.

What you are dreams are don't matter as much as how clearly you see them.

The goal is to maneuver through life's challenges. See your goals clearly. Keep repeating what you want. Expect to reach your potential.

Lou Tice shares a concept called Lock On-Lock Out. His teachings encourage people to recite and visualize their goals daily. All students at Harrison College take this amazing, life-changing class.

Are you considering entering our College of Criminal Justice? What about earning a Surgical Technology Degree? Take your pick....both offer an education, a career, and the fulfillment of a dream.

Make your extended family proud

Wednesday, July 22, 2009 by Elizabeth Nichols
In the past year and a half I have lost two aunts who were near and dear to me as well as the rest of my family. When I think of our loss, I am deeply saddened. But when I think of their lives and all they gave to me, I am thankful and I know I have been blessed by their presence in my life.

Helen Keller's view helps me: "All that we love deeply becomes a part of us."

What can be done to help deal with the loss? For me the answer is to live. Live so I honor their memory. Live so I am a blessing to others. Live to the fullest.

So I plan to take care of unfinished business. I am spending more time with family. I am working on my master's degree. I am spending more time petting my cats. I am saying no to more and yes to less; however, I am accomplishing more now than ever before.

What is your unfinished business?

Have you always wanted to go to school? Harrison College offers majors in six different areas: Health Sciences, Veterinary Technology, Business, Information Technology, Criminal Justice, and Chef's Academy. We offer an excellent adult education program, career advancement, certificate degrees, associate degrees, and bachelor degrees.

My coworkers are devoted and dedicated educational professionals. We believe our students can be successful....give us a chance to help you complete your unfinished business!

Indiana Black Expo A Success For Harrison College

Monday, July 20, 2009 by Christina Bleeke
Hello everyone. Thank you to all of you who came out to see us this weekend at the Indiana Black Expo Career and Education Fair and Summer Celebration. It was a great weekend for Harrison College and we generated a lot of interest in our college.

This weekend there were many people who asked if Harrison College was new to Indianapolis which gave us an opportunity to let people know about our name change.  Harrison College was formerly Indiana Business College; the name change occurred in May.   The reason for the name change is that we now offer more degree programs than just in Business.  We have 5 schools: Health Sciences, Criminal Justice, Information Technology, Veterinary Technology, and Business.  We now offer Degrees in health care management, surgical technology degrees, veterinary technology training, and more.  Because of our growth and expansion we had out grown the name Indiana Business College.

We also had many questions about a physical therapy program. While we do not have a physical therapy program we do offer a therapeutic and clinical massage program.

Thank you again to all of you who came out to the Indiana Black Expo this weekend. If you would like more information on Harrison College you can visit our website at www.harrison.edu.

So your parents are proud...

Monday, July 20, 2009 by Elizabeth Nichols
Every single day of my life, I have known I was loved. I call myself "the princess in the middle," partly because I was the only girl sandwiched between an older and younger brother and partly because my parents treated me as if I were special. Throughout my youth this self-image was reinforced by my immediate family, extended family, and numerous close family friends.

You might think that with all the positive reinforcement I'd be a "good" girl and never give my parents a moment of concern. Instead, my youth was filled with some events that made my parents very proud and others that filled them with sadness and disappointment. No parent deserves this....and yet most parents receive it.

I believe the time I disappointed them most was when I quit college. The truth is, they're the main reason I eventually returned and successfully graduated. When college got tough, I'd picture disappointing them again, and I'd stick it out.

Dr. Tony Campolo stated, "Your past is important because it brought you to where you are, but as important as your past is, it is not nearly as important as the way you see your future."

What does your future look like? Do you have a Human Resource Career? Perhaps you're a student in a College of Criminal Justice? Maybe you have a Systems Administrator degree....

Take steps now to make your parents proud!
