Notebooks, folders, glue sticks, and pencils were among some of the items included in each bag.

The Changing Job Market

Friday, June 11, 2010 by Chris Hutchinson
CNN.com recently published an article addressing the changes that college students are facing in a touch economy.  The article highlighted the fact that the traditional American college experience has become much more career driven, confirming the mission that Harrison College has followed for over 100 years.

The same CNN.com article highlighted the top majors according to the Princeton's Review list.  Some of the programs that are offered at Harrison College that match majors from the Princeton Review list include: Business Finance, Business Marketing and Business Management degrees, Nursing degrees, Criminal Justice degrees, and Accounting degrees.  It appears that focusing on Finance degrees is also a good solution in a challenging economy as understanding this market segment will provide a better understanding of a turbulent market.

Facebook Community Comments

Thursday, May 13, 2010 by Erin Beck
Today I learned about a new Facebook feature-the Community Page. Facebook describes this new feature as "the best collection of shared knowledge on a particular topic." So I typed in Harrison College and discovered that there is indeed a Community Page. On it you will find all groups, people, and sites that mention Harrison in their posts. (Be aware, there is another Harrison College in Barbados).

While there is already some backlash in higher education for this feature-see article here, I did read some very heart-warming posts from students that I would have otherwise not seen. Here are a few....

"Meeting with an academic advisor for Harrison College on Monday. Kinda likin the personal attention so far...."

"You are looking at the newest Criminal Justice student at Harrison College!"

"Harrison College is lookin good."

"I AM SO EXCITED! HARRISON COLLEGE HERE I COME!!!"

"Another Monday. But this one comes with a good decision. Decided to go to Harrison College online...."

We shall see if the idea of Community Pages takes off or if it dies away like some other new Facebook initiatives. One thing is to be sure, take what you read on social media sites with a grain of salt. After all, it's just one person's opinion.

Fast Track to a Bachelor Degree

Wednesday, May 5, 2010 by Erin Beck
Harrison College is beginning to roll out more opportunities for Bachelor degrees. On May 18th at 6pm, the Anderson Career College will be hosting an Alumni Night for all area graduates to come back and learn more about their three new Bachelor programs. The degrees will be in Business Management, Healthcare Management, and Criminal Justice. They will also have information on hand to let you know how many of your previous Associate degree credits will transfer over to a Bachelor program. The following is a testimonial from one of our former students on her fast track from high school to a Bachelor degree.

"I heard about Harrison College my senior year of high school in 2006. Once I learned more about the college, I called to receive additional information. I knew I wanted to go for business and knowing I could get my degree in 18 months was just what I was looking for! I attended the Evansville campus. I enjoyed the atmosphere and how all the teachers knew you by name and were always willing to help you. After finishing my Associate degree in 2008, in Business Administration, I then pursued my Bachelor degree in Business Management, which I completed in a year. It felt amazing to have completed two degrees in two and a half years. I have a job that I love, and hope other individuals will pursue their education at Harrison College."

For more information and to RSVP for the Anderson Campus event please call Kynan Simison at 765-644-7514.

New Bachelor Degree Programs

Thursday, April 22, 2010 by Chris Hutchinson
The Harrison College Anderson, Indiana campus will be launching three new Bachelor degree programs in the coming year.  In September 2010, the Anderson campus will begin offering a Health Care Management Bachelor degree as well as a Business Management Bachelor degree.  Finally, in January 2011, a Criminal Justice Bachelor degree will be offered to Anderson campus students as well.

The faculty and staff of the Anderson campus in conjunction with Harrison College Administration team members worked with local advisory board members as well as employers to identify programs that would positively impact the area employment market.  As the city of Anderson and surrounding counties continue to draw new businesses to that part of the state, it is vital to have a pool of properly trained individuals to fill the viable job openings.  Future graduates from the College of Criminal Justice will have numerous opportunities in their field.  The health care field is growing tremendously throughout the state of Indiana.  Harrison College Anderson campus graduates will have ample opportunities to purse health care management employment.  A number of companies new to the geographic area of Anderson, such as Nestle and Brevini, will benefit from having a larger pool of Bachelor degreed Business Management graduates in the area.

Does the recent Pell Grant revision impact you?

Wednesday, April 14, 2010 by Christopher Cannaley

If you've dreamed about pursuing a degree in Health Care Management, Criminal Justice, or Network Administration but were afraid you might not be able to afford it, then read on because I've got good news and even better news for you!  The Department of Education recently posted revised 2010-2011 Pell Grant payment and disbursement schedules in response to changes set forth under the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010.

So why is that good news?  Well, it's good news because if you were eligible for Pell Grant funding under the first Pell Grant schedule published in January of this year, don't worry, you will not see any reduction in your awards.  But, it's even better news because now more students, based on their individual need as determined by the FAFSA (for the 2010-2011 academic year) may now be eligible to receive a Pell Grant if their school's cost of attendance is at least $5,500!

If you are unsure as to whether or not you are affected by this change, of if you have any questions about Pell Grants or financial aid in general, please visit Harrison College's financial aid page at harrison.edu/financial-aid/eliminate-your-financial-fears.aspx.

New Program Process

Thursday, April 8, 2010 by Chris Hutchinson
As I have mentioned in previous posts, Harrison College is growing.  One of the reasons driving Harrison's growth is its commitment to new programs.  Now there is a cross-collaborative process in place that allows Harrison College campuses in Muncie, Indiana, Lafayette, Indiana and other areas, including our online division, to submit new programmatic ideas.  Some of these new program ideas focus on finance majors looking for business finance careers or for online business finance degrees.  Other programs are rooted in Harrison's College of Criminal Justice or careers in nursing.

Students are also encouraged to share their ideas with the faculty and staff of Harrison College as to what types of new programs and changes to existing programs they would like to see.  This input and feedback is vital to help keep Harrison's programs relevant and is a main reason why the College is looking to add more Fashion Merchandising courses and degrees.  For more information on any of our programs or financial aid, please visit Harrison College.

How to Write a Strong Objective for Your Resume

Thursday, April 1, 2010 by Jill Wesley
When I work with job seekers on their resumes, they often struggle with their objective statements.   First of all, an objective statement is not a required part of a resume.  If an employer can clearly tell from your educational background and work experience what type of position you are seeking, you can skip an objective statement and use the space for something else.

If, however, you are entering a new field, an objective statement can be useful.  It tells the employer how you hope to fit into the organization as well as helps you to focus your resume on the skills that are most relevant to the type of position your are seeking.

A good objective statement includes the type of position you are seeking (function and/or industry) and can also include relevant skills.  Mine for example might say: Seeking a position as Director of Career Services that requires experience working with students in a distance learning college.

So from my objective statement, a potential employer can tell that I want to work in career services and that I have an interest in or experience with working with online students on their career advancement.

Good examples:
Remember that a good objective statement will state an interest in a specific position or industry and may include reference to a skill set.
- To obtain a position as a referee that requires past experience playing basketball.
- Seeking a role as a celebrity publicist.
- Interested in using a background in criminal justice to contribute to a program that assists juvenile offenders in learning to make better choices.

Bad examples:
What you want to avoid are statements that are too general or not relevant to the type of position you are seeking.  For example:
- Seeking a position in your company (doing what?  Always remember that an employer is trying to fill a position, not find you a job).
- Interested in a role that requires strong organizational skills in which I can advance my career (This is the first sell statement of your resume so keep the focus on what you will bring to the employer rather than what you hope to gain.)
- Shooting for the stars and bringing excellence to your organization. (This just doesn't make any sense.)

If you are stumped on how to put together your own objective statement, contact your campus career services department.  Contact information is available on the Harrison website www.harrison.edu.

Admissions "Down to the Wire"

Wednesday, March 31, 2010 by Joy Brown
Here at Harrison College our spring start just a few days away, our admissions department is enrolling like mad.  When it comes to the week before start or even two weeks before classes start, students hesitate to enroll. I think it is because the admissions process seems so daunting.

Our Admissions team is a group of talented admissions specialists who are ready with the tools to make that  process efficient.  From the time we talk to the student to the time the student is enrolled can be as little as 24 to 48 hours.  This however, does depend on the student, he or she  does need to complete the necessary steps to make the enrollment process happen.

Perspective students will need to have their prior years taxes available so that they can fill our the FAFSA (federal financial aid application) , they will also need to fill out the enrollment forms (takes about 7-10 minutes), the Scholastic Level Exam (SLE) Student assessment (takes 8 minutes), and pay their $50 (non refundable) application fee.  All of these steps with the exception of the financial aid paperwork can be done in  less than 30 minutes.  There are a few other steps, like the online orientation for ANGEL (our learning management system), that happen after enrollment.

Voila! add that all up and you have an enrolled student that is on his or her road to success.

Students have more options today than they did in the past when it comes to online education.  They can enroll in programs in Criminal Justice, Network Administration careers, Health Care Management, etc.

Why wait to enroll in school? Online education is the most convenient method of learning.  You are in your own home, or on your lunch break at work, or at the park watching your kids play ball.  Give our online admissions team a call or inquire online via our website www.harrison.edu. Click on the online section and let us help you on your road to success.

WIIFM?

Thursday, March 25, 2010 by Erin Beck
As a fairly new organization, the Harrison College Alumni Association is always trying to up its WIIFM (What's In It For Me?) potential. WIIFM is a concept taught by The Pacific Institute. All staff and faculty go through a 2 day training on this, and all students, no matter if they are  finance majors or in the college of criminal justice,  learn this concept in the Strategies for Success class. Trying to serve alumni from all over the state and the country, who are of various backgrounds and ages can become a bit hectic but we want to make sure that the Association is providing something of value to its members.

The WIIFM can be member discounts, programs, events, services, anything really!

So whether you are a student, faculty, staff, alumni, or community member-What do you think would draw graduates to the Association? What should we be offering them? What would you like to see? I invite you to share your comments.

What is a Career College?

Wednesday, March 17, 2010 by Jeanni Urbahns

What is a career college? I get this question often when speaking with high school students and non-traditional students looking for adult education programs that will aid in career advancement. Harrison College is an Indiana career college. Being a graduate and an employee, I feel I can give you the basics on what makes career colleges different and why that difference is exactly what many students are looking for today.

Career colleges offer education that is related to specific careers and fields of study. This education is designed to assist the graduate in finding a career position—not just another “job.”

Most career colleges are owned and operated by individuals, private investors, or public corporations. They pay taxes yet receive no direct financial support form the state.

Career colleges are accredited. Accreditation simply means that the college is held to high quality standards in academics and sometimes in career placement of graduates. Accreditation means that the degree the graduate receives is WORTHY of the hard work and investment the student made. Accreditation can be both national and regional.  Note: always check to make sure the college you are interested in attending is accredited. You want to get your monies worth--so ask them about their accreditation and then research it online.

Career colleges focus on the needs of both students and employers! Often there is an atmosphere of service for the students—making it that much easier to achieve a degree while still maintaining family, work, and other life-obligations. Many career colleges like Harrison College also use Advisory Boards made up of local professionals and business owners. This allows the college to stay on track with what is needed by local employers--making graduates that much more prepared and employable!

Harrison College is an Indiana accredited college that offers degrees in the following areas:

  • Medical Assistant
  • Criminal Justice
  • Massage
  • Health Care Management
  • Finance
  • Business Marketing and Management
  • Help Desk
  • Human Resources
  • Nursing
  • Network Administration
  • Surgical Technology
  • Medical Laboratory Technology
  • Fashion Merchandising
  • Systems Administrator
  • Veterinary Technology

Alan Bacon, Founder of the Harrison College Diversity Committee

Saturday, March 13, 2010 by Christina Swanson

Alan BaconMeet Alan Bacon, founder of the Harrison College Diversity Committee. Alan Bacon has worked for Harrison College since March 2006. He has progressed through the organization in many different capacities; from admissions representative to Director of Admissions for the Indianapolis East Campus and most recently the Director of Career Services. Alan’s main goal and aspiration is to provide the medical community with well trained/well prepared graduates who have the soft skills and professional demeanor to be advantageous assets to specialized medical professions.

Alan graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor degree in Criminal Justice and African American Studies. While at Indiana University Alan served as the president of the National Pan-Hellenic Council and received the Student Leader Recognition Award from the Office of the Vice Chancellor. Alan is also an accomplished musician and dedicated 4 years to performing arts at Indiana University.

Alan enjoys spending time with his family, reading, working out, casually playing music, being active in sports, and watching his kids grow.

Favorite TV Show: “24” and “Lost”

Favorite Quote: “He who humbles himself will be exalted and he who exalts himself will be humbled.” – The Bible

When talking about the creation of the Harrison College Diversity Committee, Alan said, "During a Strategic Planning meeting last Spring (April 09), I posed a question to the Executive Committee, paraphrasing, “As we continue to pursue bigger and better things in the world of academia, what is Harrison College doing in regards to diversity?” At the conclusion of the meeting Mr. Bob Boudrot (VP HR) and I started to have some dialogue about the question. The dialogue turned into a future meeting, which then progressed to forming the actual committee. Some members were handpicked by myself and others were recommended to join the group. The original premise was to get a plethora of different people and ideas together to explore the topic of diversity and how it relates to the mission of Harrison College."

How May I Help You?

Tuesday, March 2, 2010 by Andrea Cohn

I ask that question so many times every day as a librarian at Harrison College (formerly Indiana Business College)! When I started this job at the Fort Wayne College just seven short months ago, I had no idea how much daily interaction I would have with the students and faculty on-campus --- and no idea how much I would love getting to know them and watch them grow as they work towards a degree in Medical AssistantBusiness Finance, Criminal Justice, or whatever Career Advancement path they have chosen at this point in their lives. I know that what I am doing is helping them take a step in the right direction.

And the best part is that I get to have FUN while I do it. Someone asked me this morning if I liked being a librarian. I said, "Absolutely! People think I'm a genius because I get to look up all of the answers. It's like being Alex Trebek!" I love working at Harrison because they care enough about their students to hire an accredited librarian at their campuses who can work individually with their students to make sure they are getting the resources they need, when they need them.

I go into the classrooms to make sure the students are being taught the Information Literacy skills they will need to be successful in the college careers, and in life. And the administration has invested in a network of librarians and on-line services (databases, e-books, journals, on line reference) to ensure success both on line and on campus. No wonder Harrison College was voted one of Indiana Best Places to Work!

Why We Advertise?

Monday, March 1, 2010 by Ashley Smith

Ever wonder why colleges use advertising? Isn't it easy to pick the right college?

Find one you’ve heard about; go through admissions; and begin your collegiate career... Right?

Well it’s not that easy. It’s been reported that 1 in 4 college freshmen will drop-out of college before completing their freshman year. Why is this you might ask? Most of the time students drop out because they started off at the wrong institution in the first place. That’s why is so important that institutions like Harrison College advertise and inform prospective students about their benefits.

So what are some of the benefits about Harrison College that we want to message out?

A Long History. In a world where many claim to be an expert, it’s comforting to know about a school that’s truly been a leader for more than 100 years.

Personal Support. We work with students one on one to help them reach their goals, from choosing a field of study to providing Career Development Assistance

Financial Aid. We’ll help devise the best plan to finance education – almost all

Harrison College students receive some form of college tuition assistance.

A Variety of Studies. We offer more than 30 programs in a wide variety of career fields in

business, criminal justice, health sciences, information technology and veterinary technology training.

Those interested in culinary arts or hospitality may learn at The Chef’s Academy.

Smart Choices. We develop our programs based on input from business leaders and research of industry growth trends to ensure that they offer strong career potential.

Career-Focused Degrees. Classes will center on selected areas of studies, period.

It’s all students need – and only what they need – to get the job they want.

Day, Evening & Online Classes. Students can enjoy flexible class schedule, including the ability to combine a distance learning college with varying levels of face-to-face, in-class instruction. Part-time and full-time study options offer even more convenience.

Multiple Campuses. We’ve strategically located our campuses to make it a reasonable commute for most anyone.

Lifetime Employment Assistance. We’re with our students every step of the way, providing guidance on writing cover letters, building resumes, interviewing, and starting great careers.

These attributes just name a few reasons why we advertise about the great opportunities that come with being a part of Harrison College.

Check out one of our commercials to see how we advertised our Long History attribute!
