Education and Employement

Monday, August 16, 2010 by Chris Hutchinson

A recent op-ed piece appearing in IBJ.com highlights the importance of boosting education in this country to positively impact companies and the economy.  The author of the article, Jamie Merisotis, mentions that Indiana is far below the national 2025 goal of 60% of citizens holding a quality college degree.  Harrison College shares the opinions of Mr. Merisotis' article and continually works towards graduating students with viable degrees to positively impact local, regional and national companies in a wide variety of fields.

Harrison College is based out of Indianapolis, IN and has 13 campus within the state as well as one campus in Columbus, Ohio.  Harrison College campus locations beyond the Indianapolis area include Anderson, Columbus, Elkhart, Evansville, Fort Wayne, Lafayette, Marion, Muncie and Terre Haute.  In addition to onground locations, Harrison College has an online division that serves students in over 20 programs, including Business Finance, Medical Assistant, Accounting, Criminal Justice, Information Technology and Health Care Management, to name a few.

As the economy becomes more globalized, it is vital that individuals in this country have meaningful college degrees in order to compete in the ever-changing marketplace.  For a complete listing of programs offered by Harrison College, please visit the following link.

Tips for Writing a Research Paper

Wednesday, June 9, 2010 by Vincent Darlage

A lot of students have difficulty writing research papers, but they shouldn't worry.  A little bit of organization, and a research paper comes together quite nicely.  It doesn't matter what your degree or major is.  Students who are studying for degrees in Health Care Management and students who are studying for human resource careers or whatever the degree is, can write a decent research paper with these tips.

To begin, you must have a thesis.  A thesis is more than just a topic.  A thesis is a topic plus an opinion.  "My black car" is not a thesis.  That is a topic.  I can't go anywhere with that.  However, "my black car is the best car in the whole wide world" is a thesis, because it has an opinion attached to it.  Now I have something to prove or argue.

Once you have the thesis, you can begin the actual research.  You may want to think of three to five things that would prove your opinion to be true.  These are the actual things you are looking for research on.  These three to five things become the topic sentences for the body of your paper.  For example, in my black car thesis, I might decide that my car is the best in the world because it gets great gas mileage, because it never breaks down, and because it responds to my emotions.  Now I can go about gathering evidence on those three points, and ignore research in other areas of the car.

Now... make an outline!  I can hear the groans of almost everyone reading this, but seriously... make an outline.  This step organizes your paper and makes it easier to write.  Write an introduction with a hook and a thesis, then go into your three to five main points.  It should look something like this:

I.  Introduction
      A. Hook (story, quote, something interesting related to your thesis)
      B. Thesis (Topic plus opinion)
      C. Preview Statement (a sentence with your three to five main points that you intend to discuss that proves your thesis true.

II.  Main Point 1  (state your first main point)
      A.  First bit of support or evidence that proves your first main point is true (make a citation)
      B.  Second bit of support or evidence that proves your first main point is true (make a citation)
      C.  Third bit of support or evidence that proves your first main point is true (make a citation)

III.  Main Point 2  (state your second main point with a transition, such as "Not only is main point 1 true, but main point 2 also proves the thesis)
      A.  First bit of support or evidence that proves your second main point is true (make a citation)
      B.  Second bit of support or evidence that proves your second main point is true (make a citation)
      C.  Third bit of support or evidence that proves your second main point is true (make a citation)

IV.  Main Point 3  (state your third main point with a transition, such as "Not only is main point 2 true, but main point 3 also proves the thesis)
      A.  First bit of support or evidence that proves your third main point is true (make a citation)
      B.  Second bit of support or evidence that proves your third main point is true (make a citation)
      C.  Third bit of support or evidence that proves your third main point is true (make a citation)

V.  Conclusion
      A. Summary Statement (a sentence with your three to five main points that you used to prove your thesis true.
      B. Restate the Thesis (Topic plus opinion)
      C. Close out with a final thought or related quote.

Now, write your first draft.  When that is done, read it out loud to see how it sounds, then revise the draft.  Repeat until you are satisfied.

Medical Assisting

Tuesday, May 11, 2010 by Chris Hutchinson
Harrison College has numerous programs within its School of Health Sciences.  Some of these program include Health Care Management, Indiana certified nursing degrees, Medical Reimbursement, Surgical Technology and Medical Assisting.

In the past, Medical Assisting has only been offered through Harrison's onground campuses.  However, Medical Assisting will begin to be offered in a nearly 100% online delivery format in the very near future.  Classes including Clinical I, Clinical II and Lab Procedures will be offered in an online format allowing students to learn through media rich content, including 3D animation.  Built in knowledge checks will also be media rich, thus allowing for full engagement by participating students.  As Medical Assisting is a program that requires clinical interaction, students participating in the online program will have set times to work with approved instructors and locations to receive hands on training before being tested on their skills.

Although Harrison College focuses mostly on Indiana based nursing and Medical Assisting programs, this online format will allow for broader range throughout the United States.

Look for more information regarding the online Medical Assisting program in the coming months or be sure to visit the Harrison College website.

New Bachelor Degree Programs

Thursday, April 22, 2010 by Chris Hutchinson
The Harrison College Anderson, Indiana campus will be launching three new Bachelor degree programs in the coming year.  In September 2010, the Anderson campus will begin offering a Health Care Management Bachelor degree as well as a Business Management Bachelor degree.  Finally, in January 2011, a Criminal Justice Bachelor degree will be offered to Anderson campus students as well.

The faculty and staff of the Anderson campus in conjunction with Harrison College Administration team members worked with local advisory board members as well as employers to identify programs that would positively impact the area employment market.  As the city of Anderson and surrounding counties continue to draw new businesses to that part of the state, it is vital to have a pool of properly trained individuals to fill the viable job openings.  Future graduates from the College of Criminal Justice will have numerous opportunities in their field.  The health care field is growing tremendously throughout the state of Indiana.  Harrison College Anderson campus graduates will have ample opportunities to purse health care management employment.  A number of companies new to the geographic area of Anderson, such as Nestle and Brevini, will benefit from having a larger pool of Bachelor degreed Business Management graduates in the area.

Does the recent Pell Grant revision impact you?

Wednesday, April 14, 2010 by Christopher Cannaley

If you've dreamed about pursuing a degree in Health Care Management, Criminal Justice, or Network Administration but were afraid you might not be able to afford it, then read on because I've got good news and even better news for you!  The Department of Education recently posted revised 2010-2011 Pell Grant payment and disbursement schedules in response to changes set forth under the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010.

So why is that good news?  Well, it's good news because if you were eligible for Pell Grant funding under the first Pell Grant schedule published in January of this year, don't worry, you will not see any reduction in your awards.  But, it's even better news because now more students, based on their individual need as determined by the FAFSA (for the 2010-2011 academic year) may now be eligible to receive a Pell Grant if their school's cost of attendance is at least $5,500!

If you are unsure as to whether or not you are affected by this change, of if you have any questions about Pell Grants or financial aid in general, please visit Harrison College's financial aid page at harrison.edu/financial-aid/eliminate-your-financial-fears.aspx.

What is a Career College?

Wednesday, March 17, 2010 by Jeanni Urbahns

What is a career college? I get this question often when speaking with high school students and non-traditional students looking for adult education programs that will aid in career advancement. Harrison College is an Indiana career college. Being a graduate and an employee, I feel I can give you the basics on what makes career colleges different and why that difference is exactly what many students are looking for today.

Career colleges offer education that is related to specific careers and fields of study. This education is designed to assist the graduate in finding a career position—not just another “job.”

Most career colleges are owned and operated by individuals, private investors, or public corporations. They pay taxes yet receive no direct financial support form the state.

Career colleges are accredited. Accreditation simply means that the college is held to high quality standards in academics and sometimes in career placement of graduates. Accreditation means that the degree the graduate receives is WORTHY of the hard work and investment the student made. Accreditation can be both national and regional.  Note: always check to make sure the college you are interested in attending is accredited. You want to get your monies worth--so ask them about their accreditation and then research it online.

Career colleges focus on the needs of both students and employers! Often there is an atmosphere of service for the students—making it that much easier to achieve a degree while still maintaining family, work, and other life-obligations. Many career colleges like Harrison College also use Advisory Boards made up of local professionals and business owners. This allows the college to stay on track with what is needed by local employers--making graduates that much more prepared and employable!

Harrison College is an Indiana accredited college that offers degrees in the following areas:

  • Medical Assistant
  • Criminal Justice
  • Massage
  • Health Care Management
  • Finance
  • Business Marketing and Management
  • Help Desk
  • Human Resources
  • Nursing
  • Network Administration
  • Surgical Technology
  • Medical Laboratory Technology
  • Fashion Merchandising
  • Systems Administrator
  • Veterinary Technology

It's Never Too Early to Consider Education and Careers

Saturday, March 13, 2010 by Jeanni Urbahns

As advocates of education, sharing the importance of education is critical to the staff and faculty members of Harrison College Columbus Indiana college campus. For the past three years we have proudly hosted grade school students participating in the annual job shadow day.

Visiting students are given the opportunity to talk with Harrison College employees about how subjects like math and spelling will someday play a big role in their college and career success. They ask questions of a variety of Harrison College employees and return to school to report back to their classmates.

This year students showed a particular interest in learning more about degrees in Health Care Management and careers in Medical Assistant.

If you are curious about the degrees the Harrison College School of Health Sciences has to offer, check us out at www.harrison.edu!

Indiana Best Places to Work- Third Year in a Row

Tuesday, February 23, 2010 by Chris Hutchinson
The Indiana Chamber of Commerce just recently announced their 2010 "Indiana Best Places to Work" list.  For the third year in a row, Harrison College made the list within the Large Company category.  This is very exciting for all of Harrison College's internal employees, but is also exciting for Harrison's students.  One of the reasons why so many Harrison employees enjoy working for this institution is because of the opportunity we all have to impact student lives.  As an institution, we all are very serious and passionate about continually improving to provide the best career opportunities for our graduates.  Depending on each program and major, Harrison College offers certificate programs, Associate Degrees, Bachelor Degrees and coming soon, Masters Degrees.  Our Anderson Career College campus will begin offering Bachelor degrees in September, 2010 in Business and Health Care Management.  At Harrison's Lafayette Indiana College campus, we are exploring Bachelor Degrees in Business Management and Health Care Management for mid 2011.  For our Muncie Indiana College campus we are researching potential programs in Early Childhood Development and Dental Hygienist, among others.

Harrison College will continue to strive to offer the most viable programs for its students because the people that make up the institution are passionate about what they do.  Hopefully our students feel our passion and are as excited about our recent honor as we are.

Professional Vertigo Sends Adults on Search for More Education

Friday, August 28, 2009 by Jeanni Urbahns

At one time or another, I think that many of us suffer from what I like to call “professional vertigo.”

Vertigo is a condition often associated with a sensation of dizziness, confusion and a disoriented state of mind. In the ever changing world that we call “business,” it is not uncommon for our jobs to cause these same sensations. I started thinking about all of the different businesses having to make staffing changes during the economic downturn.

If asked, I believe that admissions teams at many of the Indiana accredited colleges, would agree that adult education programs have seen an increase in enrollments due to professional vertigo.

Jackie Griffith, Admissions Representative at Harrison College and graduate of Indiana Business College, explains it like this, “As the economy changes, so do the jobs. In order to stay employed or perhaps find a new job, people are finding it necessary to go back to school to earn a college degree or update a degree earned years before.”

“So many of the adult students I meet with are in need of some type of career development assistance because they now find themselves with new responsibilities in their current job or in need of finding a new career position,” adds Gina Pate, Director of Admissions at the Harrison College Columbus Indiana college campus.

Griffith is quick to add, “Those I talk with seem to understand that the key to surviving this economy is the ability to adapt and evolve. They know that in order to stay successful or to be successful in a new career, finding a college for working adults is the best way to have a competitive edge.”

If you find yourself suffering from professional vertigo, take a deep breath, relax and call Harrison College. Offering degrees in Health Care Management to Fashion Merchandising courses—from Criminal Justice to Veterinary Technology training—Harrison College has something for everyone!

Def Leppard Concert A Success!

Monday, July 27, 2009 by Emily Sabau
Last Thursday, July 23, was the Def Leppard concert at Verizon Wireless Music Center.  Harrison College had a lot of fun listening to old rock tunes while informing people about all the great programs we have to offer!

A lot of people wanted more information about our health sciences program.  I told them there are a lot of career options in the health sciences field of study such as getting a degree in medical assistant and degrees in health care management as well as medical reimbursement specialist.

Some people expressed concern for going back to school because they felt they were too busy, but Harrison College is a college for working adults because of our flexible class schedule.  Even if you feel you are too busy, it's always a good investment in your career to further your education!

Harrison College will be at Verizon Wireless again this Friday and Saturday for the Dave Matthews Band concerts.  Come check out our table to get more information or visit our website.  Hope to see you there!

Indiana Black Expo A Success For Harrison College

Monday, July 20, 2009 by Christina Bleeke
Hello everyone. Thank you to all of you who came out to see us this weekend at the Indiana Black Expo Career and Education Fair and Summer Celebration. It was a great weekend for Harrison College and we generated a lot of interest in our college.

This weekend there were many people who asked if Harrison College was new to Indianapolis which gave us an opportunity to let people know about our name change.  Harrison College was formerly Indiana Business College; the name change occurred in May.   The reason for the name change is that we now offer more degree programs than just in Business.  We have 5 schools: Health Sciences, Criminal Justice, Information Technology, Veterinary Technology, and Business.  We now offer Degrees in health care management, surgical technology degrees, veterinary technology training, and more.  Because of our growth and expansion we had out grown the name Indiana Business College.

We also had many questions about a physical therapy program. While we do not have a physical therapy program we do offer a therapeutic and clinical massage program.

Thank you again to all of you who came out to the Indiana Black Expo this weekend. If you would like more information on Harrison College you can visit our website at www.harrison.edu.
