The Importance of the Thank You Note By Melissa Barnett

Wednesday, June 23, 2010 by Jeanni Urbahns

When was the last time you sat down and wrote a letter to someone? Does anyone have an old-fashioned pen pal these days? What about with our kids? Do we stand over them like our parents did, making them write thank you notes for gifts received?

While these practices seem like a thing of the past, one very important step in the job search that should not be ignored is writing a thank you note after an interview.

According to a number of studies, less than 10% of job seekers take the time to send a thank you note, even though employers expect that applicants take the time to do so.

When hiring managers were asked "How important is it for a job candidate to send a thank you note after the interview?" The result was as follows: 29% said it's extremely important, 41% said it's somewhat important and 20% said it is not important at all.

Now, I would say that in our area, with employers whom I work, those percentages are even higher. The biggest reason being, they have come to expect thank you notes from Harrison College graduates. Consistently, employers, HR managers, practice manager, and many others, tell me that our grads are among the few applicants who take the time to send a thank you note after an interview. This warms my heart as a Career Services professional and an educator!

The biggest question I am asked is: “What do I write?”

Here is one great example that would easily fit on any thank you card:

Dear Mrs. Miller:

Thank you for taking the time to meet with me about the Medical Assistant position with Columbus Medical.

This position seems like a very good match for my skills and competencies. I was impressed with your practice’s energy and overall positive attitude. I would definitely enjoy being a part of that, and know I could contribute to the group.

I appreciate your time and look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Katie Jones

“Sending a thank you note demonstrates that you are good with people. You employ the most basic of people skills---a show of gratitude”             - Author Unknown

Medical Assisting

Tuesday, May 11, 2010 by Chris Hutchinson
Harrison College has numerous programs within its School of Health Sciences.  Some of these program include Health Care Management, Indiana certified nursing degrees, Medical Reimbursement, Surgical Technology and Medical Assisting.

In the past, Medical Assisting has only been offered through Harrison's onground campuses.  However, Medical Assisting will begin to be offered in a nearly 100% online delivery format in the very near future.  Classes including Clinical I, Clinical II and Lab Procedures will be offered in an online format allowing students to learn through media rich content, including 3D animation.  Built in knowledge checks will also be media rich, thus allowing for full engagement by participating students.  As Medical Assisting is a program that requires clinical interaction, students participating in the online program will have set times to work with approved instructors and locations to receive hands on training before being tested on their skills.

Although Harrison College focuses mostly on Indiana based nursing and Medical Assisting programs, this online format will allow for broader range throughout the United States.

Look for more information regarding the online Medical Assisting program in the coming months or be sure to visit the Harrison College website.

Time and Money

Wednesday, March 24, 2010 by Omar Habayeb
You have no doubt heard from several people and in several places statements like "time is money" and "time and money are finite resources."  This is most certainly true whether you are looking to pursue your  training as a Medical Reimbursement Specialist, a Help Desk Career or one of many other Certificate Degrees.  I am always amazed at the excuses that people come up with for why they are not able to start their degree.

"I want to wait for my kids to grow up."
"I want to save up money before I go to college"
"I don't have enough time between work and family to go to college"

Let's say that you are 33 years old.   'Standard' retirement age is 65 (how many people do you know actually STAY retired even at that age..but we will use for calculation purposes)  This means that:

    - You have 32 more years to work..an average of 2,000 hours a year for a total of 64,000 hours.
    - If you are working a job that pays $8 an hour you will make $512,000 between now and when you retire.
    - Let's say you take two years to go to school and obtain your degree and this enables you to be qualified for a job that pays $11 an hour....you just increased your earning potential by $148,000.

Wouldn't it be nice to provide nicer things for your children BEFORE they grow up?
How much easier will it be to save more money when you are making more money?

With the availability of online classes......you can balance time between work and family and still have the time to purse your career.  Visit the Harrison College website to find the right program to maximize your time!

Get to Know Us--The Columbus Indiana Harrison College Campus Overview

Monday, March 22, 2010 by Jeanni Urbahns

For 108 years, Harrison College, formerly Indiana Business College, has been serving the educational needs of career-minded individuals in Columbus, Indiana and the surrounding communities. With 12 campuses across Indiana, an online campus serving students across the nation and internationally, and a campus in Columbus, Ohio, Harrison College has long been respected in the business world for educating students for careers in accounting, business, and administrative positions.

Taking to heart the need for skilled healthcare workers, Harrison College added the School of Health Sciences several years ago. The Columbus Indiana college campus was the first local college to offer an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Medical Assistant that was recognized and approved by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA.)

Currently the Columbus, Indiana campus offers degrees in the following majors; Accounting, Administrative Professional, Business Finance, Business Management, Business Marketing, Medical Assistant, and Medical Reimbursement Technology.  Locally, approximately 230 students are attending day, evening, and online courses.

Many Harrison College Columbus students are working adults with families and responsibilities outside of their pursuit of a college degree.  Flexibility in scheduling and a quarterly class schedule allow many students more time for family, friends, and life in general.

Making service a part of the educational experience is very important to every Harrison College employee.  The number one perk of being a Harrison College student is the one-on-one financial aid assistance, according to our current students. Free tutoring, small class sizes, full-disclosure enrollment process, on-track scheduling, and the Tuition Freeze Program are just a few of the other reasons many current students and graduates say they chose to attend the Columbus, Indiana campus. Current students are also able to participate in the services offered through Student Resource Services for advice and counseling free of charge and provided by Master-degree professionals.  Life-long employment assistance and the guidance of the Career Services office are often mentioned as services appreciated by graduates too.

The Columbus campus is located near the Columbus Municipal Airport at 2222 Poshard Drive. The campus is open for tours and welcomes walk-ins at any time Monday through Thursday 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM and Friday 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.  Classes are held Monday through Thursday between 8:00 AM and 2:00 PM and 5:30 PM and 9:30 PM.  To learn more about the degree programs or services offered at Harrison College please call 812-379-9000 or visit www.harrison.edu.

Indy East Advisory Board Meeting

Friday, March 12, 2010 by Chris Hutchinson

I had the pleasure of attending Harrison College's Indianapolis East campus Advisory Board meeting recently.  The Indianapolis East campus focuses on Indiana Nursing School Degrees and Careers.  The Advisory Board meeting brought in many industry experts from those that work with professionals holding surgical technology degrees to those working with medical reimbursement specialists.  One of the highlights of the meeting was learning that one of our recent graduates recently landed a massage career with the Indianapolis Indians, and this person was the first massage therapist ever hired by Indians' organization.

Some other exciting news that was revealed at the meeting was that the Indiana Board of Nursing recently completed their final visit of the Indianapolis East campus and granted Harrison College full approval for its Nursing program.  Additionally, a simulation lab has been set up at the Indianapolis East campus that will utilize a 3G manikin to simulate an actual physician's office.  Lastly, the Learning Resource Center at the campus has made significant upgrades to add new collections, online databases, e-books, DVDs and documentaries for all of the campuses programs.

If you are interested in learning more about any of the nursing degrees or massage programs available at Harrison College, please visit our website at www.harrison.edu.

The Federal Government is NOT going to be providing money for you to go to school for free!

Monday, March 1, 2010 by Omar Habayeb

There are quite a few confusing messages on line these days.  It doesn't matter if you are  searching for a System Administrator Career or pursuing training as a Medical Reimbursement Specialist.  You are constantly being bombarded with misleading and inaccurate messages.   Let me simply state for the record that The Federal Government is NOT going to be providing you money to go to school ENTIRELY for free!   I know that may come as a major disappointment, but  college is affordable.  There is a financial plan for everyone.  If there is a will, there is a way.  There are lots of ways to pay to attend college: grants, loans (and taking out loans to invest in yourself isn't bad!), online college scholarships, interest-free payments, and all sorts of other options.   Check out http://www.harrison.edu/financial-aid/eliminate-your-financial-fears.aspx for assistance in alleviating your financial fears.

How many jobs make a career?

Monday, February 8, 2010 by Kristie Williams

Do you dream of becoming a Medical Reimbursement Specialist? Being a military spouse makes it difficult for us to have a career but it doesn't mean you can't. I was browsing the military spouse magazine on MilSpouse.com and saw this article. I thought this would be a great article to share with you. It focuses on 11 ways to create a fulfilling a career.

how-many-jobs-make-a-careerHow Many Jobs Make a Career?

11 ways to create a fulfilling career.

by Heidi Smith Luedtke

If you’re like many military spouses, you reinvent your life every time you move to a new duty station. Though it can be fun to try new things, frequent job changes can also make it difficult to progress on a meaningful career path. But don’t let self-pity or self-doubt keep you from creating a work life you love.

Your attitude sets the tone for what is going to happen in your life,” career coach Wendy Billie said.

1. Create a vision. Make it a habit to sit down at least twice a year and think about what you want (and what you don’t want) in your work life. Imagine it vividly.

2. Experiment with possibilities. If your dream job seems really far out, don’t despair. Take classes to learn more, volunteer your time to develop needed skills and social contacts, or shadow someone who does the job you want.

3. Stay flexible. It may feel like you’re at a disadvantage because you’re forced to change jobs frequently, but the days when employees worked their way up from the mailroom to the corner office are long since past. “Most adults, especially those in the 20- to 35-year-old age bracket, will have four to six careers in their working life span,” said career coach Kathy McFarland Sciannella. The key to navigating tight job markets and successful planning is flexibility, she said.

4. Be a lifelong learner. If you’ve held the same type of job for a long time, you may get comfortable (and even bored) with it. Even if a job change isn’t on the horizon, find ways to challenge yourself and expand your capabilities. Ask the boss to support you in trying new roles or obtaining additional training.

If you are seeking employment or wanting to further your education now is the time to begin that Online Business Finance Degree or even that college massage program.

Branding Yourself Online

Thursday, February 4, 2010 by Jill Wesley
When you begin your program with Harrison, you should keep the end in mind - what do you want to do when you've finished your studies?  Is there a specific company that you've always dreamed of working for?  How will you move in the direction you are interested in?

Today, the Internet offers a multitude of different tools that you can use to create your personal brand that will allow you to share your background and career interest with others.  For example, you could create a profile on LinkedIn that shares your plans to become a Medical Reimbursement Specialist or that you are pursuing an Online Business Finance Degree.  Or look for a blog that is written by someone who is interested in Human Resources Careers and add a comment to an entry that you find relevant to your own interests.

Brainstorm on different websites that will help you to build the brand that you want to be know for.  Your goal is to make sure that whatever keywords an employer would use to look for someone with your background are associated with your name. That way, when an employer uses Google or another tool to search for job candidates, you are increasingly the possibility that she will find you.

Do be careful that you Google (or use another search engine) your name on a regular basis so that you know what information is out there about you and are certain that it all reflects well on you and your capabilities.  If you know that there is negative information out there about you, you can take steps to remove or minimize it, which I will talk about in a future post.

Although creating an online brand can be useful, it isn't for everyone.  Be careful with the amount and type of information you share about yourself (never give anyone else your passwords or other personal information).  Only share as much information as you are comfortable sharing.

If you are a current Harrison student and would like ideas on how to brand yourself online, contact the Career Services Staff at your campus.

One Student's Experience-An Essay About Harrison College

Thursday, January 28, 2010 by Jeanni Urbahns

It is not unusual that Harrison College Columbus Indiana college campus students are the best allies we could have. Each quarter we Kayla Brewer, Harrison College student attending the Columbus Indiana college campushave many students who hear about us and enroll based on the experience of a friend or family member already enrolled in a Harrison College adult education program.

To show that our students really do have a high opinion of the college and the education we provide, I am sharing an essay written by Kayla Brewer. Kayla is a Columbus, Indiana college student pursuing her Medical Assistant degree. She is looking forward to a medical assisting career where she can experience career advancement while helping others.

Thanks for Choosing Harrison College

By Kayla Brewer

“We change lives, one student at a time.”  That is Harrison College’s motto and they stick to that statement.  Harrison is a small college, and it is becoming more and more popular.  Harrison College is a great college to attend because of the small class sizes, the help that is available if needed, and the benefits of choosing Harrison.

First, a good reason for choosing Harrison College is because of the small class sizes.  Small class sizes give the students a more personal atmosphere and more one-on-one time with the instructor.  The instructors are always available if needed.  Because of the small class, the students get to know each other on a more personal note and soon become friends.  Everyone at this college is so nice and if someone ever needed something, all that is needed is to ask someone and soon it is there.

Another reason for choosing Harrison is the help that is available anytime.  Whether it is tutoring or financial help, someone is always here if and when needed.  On every door in the building there is a piece of paper that lists all the instructors and the times they are available for tutoring.  If that time in particular does not fit one’s schedule, contact the instructor and he/she will find a time that will work for both parties involved.  Another kind of help available is financial aid.  Kathy and Megan are the local financial aid analysts and are always there if needed.  They are always encouraging students to apply for scholarships and grants to help pay for tuition.  The students can make an appointment any time if they need to see Kathy or Megan about their financial issues.

Finally, the third reason for choosing Harrison College is the benefits.  One benefit of choosing Harrison is the flexible class schedules.  If the student is working during the day and is unable to take day classes, night classes are available.  Online classes are also available if the student has a job, children, and other things to do and cannot handle the pressure of also going to class.  Another benefit of Harrison is that they offer many types of degrees.  Here at the local Columbus campus not as many degrees are offered as the main college in Indianapolis, but there are still quite a lot to choose from.  Degrees offered in Columbus range from business degrees to medical degrees.  Some of the business degrees offered are accounting, business finance, business management, and human resources.  The medical degrees offered are medical assisting and medical reimbursement technology.

There are many reasons to choose Harrison College, but the small class sizes, the help that is available, and the benefits of Harrison are just a few.  So when starting at Harrison, remember, if anything is needed, help is always available from anybody.

At Harrison College, the Goal Comes First

Saturday, September 19, 2009 by Kay Newton

groupThe goal comes first…..

Lou Tice teaches us that “the goal comes first, and then you see.” Students at Harrison College learn this lesson early in their first quarter classes when they participate in the Strategies for Success course. Lou gives us many mantras in that course, but none so significant as this one. The goal comes first……

Elkhart College students recently put this statement into action through the creation of vision boards. As we worked through the Strategies course, we learned the principles of I x V = R, words trigger pictures trigger emotions, and developing SMART goals that are then put into action by positive, first-person, present-tense affirmations. The end results for us were beautiful, affirming, emotional vision boards, such as you see here.

Students are enrolled in a variety of career programs: business finance, business marketing, careers in medical assistant, criminal justice careers, and medical reimbursement specialist careers. However, they all share the common vision of graduating from Harrison College and becoming successful, skilled, employees in their chosen career.  Beyond that, their visions incorporated such things as marriage, ocean-front retirements, financial security, luxury vehicles, travel, and generally peace of mind and achievement.

Students commented that this was a powerful exercise for them. By focusing on their goals (vision), they were able to create affirmations (words) that elicited great emotion when they were combined with their visuals presented on their boards. We laughed, got teary-eyed and choked up at times, as the students presented their visions to their classmates and shared their dreams.   Lou asks us to “dream big,” and this project brought out some of the biggest dreams one can imagine!

Harrison College helps students DREAM BIG! We also help students create that path to realize their dreams. Come join us at Harrison College. Let us help YOU create your path to your dream.

Leading by Example-The Story of a Lifelong Learner

Thursday, September 3, 2009 by Jeanni Urbahns

“America’s future will be determined by the home and the school. The child becomes largely what he is taught; hence we must watch what we teach, and how we live.” Jane Adams

Vene Bartlett, Harrison College Columbus Indiana college campus student and lifelong learner.
The following was written by Vene Bartlett, a student at the Harrison College Columbus, Indiana campus. Thank you, Vene, for sharing your this with us all.

No matter how old they are, one of my favorite things to do is hold my grandchildren on my lap and rock them, just as my grandmother once did to me, slowly back and forth while patting their little legs in a steady rhythm. What a comfort it had been for me as a child and here I find myself passing it along to a new generation. What an example my grandmother was to me! And now, I find my grandson, Malik, only three years old, patting my arm or back the same way. I find great pleasure in thinking that my great grandchildren and their children who follow will find the same comfort that I felt as a child.

Sometimes I sit and think about the impact that my life has on my grandchildren and the example I am setting for them in word and deed. One value I plan to pass along to future generations is the belief that a college education is a priority.

You see, we are a family of adult learners who value education at any age. Dave Bartlett, AKA “Grandpa”, is currently a student at Harrison College’s distance learning program in pursuit of a network administration career. I am a student at Harrison College Columbus Indiana college campus taking day classes that will assist me in a career as a medical reimbursement specialist.
My oldest daughter, Megan, is a student at Harrison also. She attends classes at night. My youngest daughter, Amy is a registered nurse and is currently teaching at the campus at nights.

I know that our belief in education will impact generations to come. As a mother and grandmother, I have always stressed the importance of studying hard and doing your personal best in school, but as adult education program student, I, and the rest of the adults in my family, have put this belief into action and become a living example of what education can do. We have become living examples to the children.

If you are an adult learner and experiencing days when you think you just can’t do it anymore, ask yourself what kind of an example am I setting for my family and remember the power you have to make a positive impact on the ones around you.

I am happy to report that my ten year old granddaughter, Makala, is already planning her college education at Harrison College.

Financial Aid Meets Customer Service

Saturday, August 22, 2009 by Jeanni Urbahns

What would you consider the most difficult part of enrolling in an adult education program? Some students would say selecting a school—after all, finding a flexible class schedule is important and deciding on attending class at the local campus or to take distance learning college courses.

But once those decisions have been made, the number one difficult part of deciding to go to college is often HOW AM I GOING TO PAY FOR MY EDUCATION?

Harrison College has an answer for that—Financial Aid. You might be thinking that EVERY college can offer financial aid so what makes it so special at Harrison College? Well, it’s our approach. Every campus employs trained, professional, caring financial aid analysts to provide answers about financial aid to our students. Why? The answer is simple, education leads to a higher success rate. If our students are educated about the options available to them, they are more likely to spend less time worrying about how they are going to pay for their college and concentrate more on learning the skills they need to be successful after graduation.

Click on the video to hear what Wayne Vice, Columbus Indiana college student now enrolled in both the Medical Assistant and Medical Reimbursement Technology programs has to say about the service he has received as a student at Harrison College.

Indiana Business College Becomes Harrison College

Thursday, July 30, 2009 by Jeanni Urbahns

In April of 2009 Indiana Business College made their biggest announcement since opening the distance learning college division. We announced that we were changing our name. Indiana Business College had become Harrison College.

WOW, was about the only thought that came to my mind as all the employees listened to Ken Konesco make the announcement via conference call across the state. I am an Indiana Business College graduate and I wasn’t sure how I felt about the new name. Sure, it sounded good, but what did it mean to who we are and what we do? I understood that the word “Business “ did not accurately depict who we had become—after all, over half of the students at the Columbus Indiana college campus were pursuing degrees in Medical Assistant or Medical Reimbursement Technology. And “Indiana” wasn’t really representative to us with the addition of our Online division and the addition of a Columbus Ohio ground campus scheduled to open in the fall of 2009. But there were things about Indiana Business College that I hoped would not change with our name.

Career-Focused Education—Our history shows that many people desire an education focused on specific career skills. More now than ever before, people find value in cutting to the chase so to speak. With access to the world at our fingertips, fewer people feel the need to complete as many general education courses and just get to the heart of the matter. As a student I valued that my time was not spent taking courses I didn’t really need to function as a professional in an office setting.

Student-Centered Education—I chose Indiana Business College specifically because I was recognized as an individual and a CUSTOMER. I value customer service regardless of where I am, and college was no exception. There were many aspects of attending college that were new to me—Financial Aid and class schedules were just two that came to mind. At a large community college I didn’t receive any service and left feeling very discouraged. From the moment I entered the Columbus college campus I knew Indiana Business College was different. The service I received gave me just enough confidence to get started. As an employee, I have always taken pride in continuing to provide that service to students every day.

Career Services—Well, this is a no-brainer! What a HUGE bonus this was to me as a student. Not only did I feel confident that I would receive a quality education and a degree that would take me places, but I was promised assistance in finding a career position when I graduated. On top of that, that promise carries over for my lifetime.  I found no other local college able to say that they had such documented success with graduate career placement.

These are just a few of the things that I KNOW set Indiana Business College apart from the other colleges in our area. Would they continue to be a part of our culture as we became Harrison College?

Well, almost three months later I am happy to say that Harrison College is living up to the expectations I had as a graduate. I am proud to be an employee of the only college to make it onto the Indiana Best Places to Work list for 2009.

Would you like to experience an education built around the skills you need and the fact that you are an individual? Would you like to work for a company that values education and service? If you answered yes, please visit our web site at www.harrison.edu .

Def Leppard Concert A Success!

Monday, July 27, 2009 by Emily Sabau
Last Thursday, July 23, was the Def Leppard concert at Verizon Wireless Music Center.  Harrison College had a lot of fun listening to old rock tunes while informing people about all the great programs we have to offer!

A lot of people wanted more information about our health sciences program.  I told them there are a lot of career options in the health sciences field of study such as getting a degree in medical assistant and degrees in health care management as well as medical reimbursement specialist.

Some people expressed concern for going back to school because they felt they were too busy, but Harrison College is a college for working adults because of our flexible class schedule.  Even if you feel you are too busy, it's always a good investment in your career to further your education!

Harrison College will be at Verizon Wireless again this Friday and Saturday for the Dave Matthews Band concerts.  Come check out our table to get more information or visit our website.  Hope to see you there!

Wisdom from Laffy Taffy....Why did the sun go to school?

ANSWER: It wanted to be brighter

A quote by Nido R. Qubein in Zig Ziglar's book Inspiration 365 Days A Year, goes a step further: Training teaches people what to do; education teaches people what do be.

So I guess the really big question is this: What do YOU want to BE?????

At Harrison College, we can train you to be a Medical Reimbursement Specialist, a Systems Administrator, or a Health Care Manager. We have locations in Anderson, Lafayette, Elkhart, Indianapolis, and Terre Haute; plus we offer Distance Learning College! This means you can join us no matter where you live!

My personal teaching motto is that you can be anything you put your heart and mind to. When the heart and mind join together, they make a force that just can't be beat. So.....what do YOU want to BE?????
