Market Yourself to Employers

Wednesday, March 10, 2010 by Kristie Williams
Being a military spouse requires us to move from base to base with our loved ones. Some of us are stay-at-home moms but some of us try to find work each time we move.  All of our moves can mean a long resume with the different positions listed that we have had during the years.   In looking for jobs, I know I ask myself all time "how do I sell myself?" all the time. I have always had a difficult time answering this question.

I came across an article on milspouse.com that I found helpful and I would like to share it with you:

Market Yourself to Employers

When you are looking for employment, you are selling a product — yourself.

by Joshua Hudson

Looking for a job is a full-time business. Like business, you need to understand your product, your potential clients and have a strategy to get those clients to buy. So remember the story of “the man and his mule.”

A very poor farmer was forced to sell his five mules for $20 each. An entrepreneurial young man took out a loan and bought all the mules for $100. He then put a sign, “Pack animals – $100 each” outside his barn. He sold all five of them within the week.

The poor farmer, clearly upset that he hadn’t earned the same profits, asked, “How did you sell those mules for $100 each? They weren’t worth more than the $20 I sold them to you for.” Please click here to continue reading the article

The great thing about Harrison College is that during your last quarter you will take a Career Development course that prepares our graduates how to sell themselves during an interview. With the career development assistance, I believe that they give us military spouses the tools that we need to get the position we are applying for.

History of the Internet

Tuesday, March 2, 2010 by Paul Weathersby
Hopefully you have recovered from our "deep dive discussion" on Friday regarding the topic of subnets.  But what I may have forgotten to mention is that every computer on a network needs an IP address in order to communicate with other computers on a network.  Subnetting just expands the functionality of IP addressing.

Hopefully individuals with Network Administration Careers already have a baseline understanding of networking.  But, since we dove head first into subnets, you may not have gained much appreciation for networks and how they work.

With that in mind, I thought I would give you a brief introduction about the Internet.  Don't leave yet!  Rather than boring you with my ramblings in a long winded blog, I found a great online animation for your quick history lesson.  The video is only 8 minutes in length.

"History of the Internet" is an animated documentary explaining the inventions from time-sharing to filesharing and from Arpanet to Internet.

Enjoy the show!

Why We Advertise?

Monday, March 1, 2010 by Ashley Smith

Ever wonder why colleges use advertising? Isn't it easy to pick the right college?

Find one you’ve heard about; go through admissions; and begin your collegiate career... Right?

Well it’s not that easy. It’s been reported that 1 in 4 college freshmen will drop-out of college before completing their freshman year. Why is this you might ask? Most of the time students drop out because they started off at the wrong institution in the first place. That’s why is so important that institutions like Harrison College advertise and inform prospective students about their benefits.

So what are some of the benefits about Harrison College that we want to message out?

A Long History. In a world where many claim to be an expert, it’s comforting to know about a school that’s truly been a leader for more than 100 years.

Personal Support. We work with students one on one to help them reach their goals, from choosing a field of study to providing Career Development Assistance

Financial Aid. We’ll help devise the best plan to finance education – almost all

Harrison College students receive some form of college tuition assistance.

A Variety of Studies. We offer more than 30 programs in a wide variety of career fields in

business, criminal justice, health sciences, information technology and veterinary technology training.

Those interested in culinary arts or hospitality may learn at The Chef’s Academy.

Smart Choices. We develop our programs based on input from business leaders and research of industry growth trends to ensure that they offer strong career potential.

Career-Focused Degrees. Classes will center on selected areas of studies, period.

It’s all students need – and only what they need – to get the job they want.

Day, Evening & Online Classes. Students can enjoy flexible class schedule, including the ability to combine a distance learning college with varying levels of face-to-face, in-class instruction. Part-time and full-time study options offer even more convenience.

Multiple Campuses. We’ve strategically located our campuses to make it a reasonable commute for most anyone.

Lifetime Employment Assistance. We’re with our students every step of the way, providing guidance on writing cover letters, building resumes, interviewing, and starting great careers.

These attributes just name a few reasons why we advertise about the great opportunities that come with being a part of Harrison College.

Check out one of our commercials to see how we advertised our Long History attribute!

Professional Vertigo Sends Adults on Search for More Education

Friday, August 28, 2009 by Jeanni Urbahns

At one time or another, I think that many of us suffer from what I like to call “professional vertigo.”

Vertigo is a condition often associated with a sensation of dizziness, confusion and a disoriented state of mind. In the ever changing world that we call “business,” it is not uncommon for our jobs to cause these same sensations. I started thinking about all of the different businesses having to make staffing changes during the economic downturn.

If asked, I believe that admissions teams at many of the Indiana accredited colleges, would agree that adult education programs have seen an increase in enrollments due to professional vertigo.

Jackie Griffith, Admissions Representative at Harrison College and graduate of Indiana Business College, explains it like this, “As the economy changes, so do the jobs. In order to stay employed or perhaps find a new job, people are finding it necessary to go back to school to earn a college degree or update a degree earned years before.”

“So many of the adult students I meet with are in need of some type of career development assistance because they now find themselves with new responsibilities in their current job or in need of finding a new career position,” adds Gina Pate, Director of Admissions at the Harrison College Columbus Indiana college campus.

Griffith is quick to add, “Those I talk with seem to understand that the key to surviving this economy is the ability to adapt and evolve. They know that in order to stay successful or to be successful in a new career, finding a college for working adults is the best way to have a competitive edge.”

If you find yourself suffering from professional vertigo, take a deep breath, relax and call Harrison College. Offering degrees in Health Care Management to Fashion Merchandising courses—from Criminal Justice to Veterinary Technology training—Harrison College has something for everyone!

Understanding College Makes for a Positive Experience

Tuesday, August 25, 2009 by Jeanni Urbahns

Really understanding what someone is saying to you is VERY important.

Many years ago, my sister was driving my niece, Kenan, to school and her son, Andrew, who was about 4 years old at the time, was along for the ride. Halloween was coming up and the conversation revolved around the costumes the kids would be wearing.

Andrew yelled from the backseat, “Sissy, what are you going to be for trick or treat?” “A ballerina,” she answered from the front seat. “What,” he asked horrified, “a javelina?” (Pronounced Have-A-Leena) His little face contorted in a frown.

My sister just laughed and laughed. You see, this is a ballerina.

And this is a javelina—a wild, vicious, pig-like animal that is widely hunted in their home state of Texas.

No wonder Andrew was freaked out—he simply misunderstood what had been said.

A misunderstanding—be it an actual word being heard wrong or an idea or instruction not being fully understood—can easily turn what should be an exciting and enjoyable experience into something stressful and frustrating.

Working for Harrison College, an Indiana accredited college; I have talked with many students who did not have positive experiences with the first college they attended. In fact, this is not uncommon with students enrolled in adult education programs and students (and their parents) attending college right out of high school. Not understanding financial aid, transfer of credits, or even attendance policies can turn a positive educational experience into a negative experience that could tarnish the rest of the student’s time in school.

Every student has rights. One right is to understand all aspects of their college experience. Use your student handbook as your guide and listen with an open mind. Remember, there are no stupid questions—only stupid misunderstandings.

Students at Harrison College experience a level of customer service seen in few colleges. This level of service can be found from the Harrison College Elkhart college campus to the Evansville college campus and even at our distance learning college virtual campus. You see, service increases understanding and communication between the college and our students. It's not just a matter of "business" for us--It is part of our culture and who we are.

If you want service and understanding to be a part of your college experience, I invite you to contact the Harrison College campus nearest you. Don't live near a Harrison College campus? No problem--our online campus may be the best choice for you.

21st Century Scholar Program-Helping Families Pay for Education

Monday, August 17, 2009 by Jeanni Urbahns

Across Indiana students began returning to classes this past week. As I ran from school to school with my children--making sure we hit every open house, all I could think was—Is it possible that summer has gone by so quickly?

While touring the school with my son who is starting 8th grade this year, I met Carrie. Carrie is a Student Coordinator for the Twenty-first Century Scholars program.  The program started in 1990 as a way to encourage students from low to moderate-income families to pursue a college education.  Students who qualify and complete the Twenty-first Century Scholars Program receive financial assistance to pay for or help pay for tuition costs when they enter college. Enrollment in the program is open to students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades.

Eligibility is based on household income at the time when the enrollment form is completed. As a Twenty-first Century Scholar, the student makes a pledge to do the following things:

  • Graduate with an Indiana High School Diploma from a charter school, freeway school or other Indiana school recognized by the Indiana Department of Education

  • Achieve a cumulative high school GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale

  • Not to use illegal drugs or alcohol, or to commit a crime

  • Apply for admission to an eligible Indiana college, university or proprietary institution as a high school senior

  • Apply on time for state and federal student financial aid

Harrison College is recognized by the Indiana Department of Education and works every year with students participating in the Twenty-first Century Scholar Program. You will still find us on the list of Eligible Indiana Colleges, Universities and Proprietary Schools as Indiana Business College.

To find out if your child qualifies, visit the State Student Assistance Commission of Indiana page for full details. If you would like to speak with someone near you about the program or if you would like to complete an enrollment form, click here to see the contact information for your local Support Site.

Twenty-first Century Scholars are currently pursuing degrees in medical assistant, veterinary technology, criminal justice, and business management. Past Scholars are already working in help desk careers and business marketing careers. Don't put off enrolling in this program any longer. The ten minutes you spend now completing the enrollemnt form could save you thousands of dollars when your child is ready to go to college.

Top 5 Harrison College Questions Asked at the Indiana State Fair

Thursday, August 13, 2009 by Jeanni Urbahns

Earlier this week, I went to the Indiana State Fair and had the opportunity to be a part of the Harrison College booth. What fun that was! I was excited to talk with people from all over the state as they stopped by to see who we are and what we are all about. While we were talking I began to see that there were a few questions that seemed to be the most common.

So, here are the top 5 Questions Asked at the Indiana State Fair!

Q:  “Where is Harrison College located?”

A:  Harrison College is everywhere! We are as close as next door throughout Indiana in Elkhart, Muncie, Anderson, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Columbus, Terre Haute, Evansville, and Lafayette. We are excited about our newest campus in Columbus, Ohio—the first ground-campus we have outside of the state of Indiana. And we are available INTERNATIONALLY via our distance learning college. Many people have known about us for 107 years—but they knew us by the name Indiana Business College—and as you can see, we are not just in Indiana anymore.

Q:  “What kinds of degrees do you offer?”

A:
Many people are surprised that we offer both Associate and Bachelors degrees. We offer high quality instruction in small classes or via online college courses. Our students earn degrees in Accounting, Business Marketing, Business Management, Criminal Justice, Vet Tech, Medical Assistant, Network Administration, and Massage Therapy just to name a few. For a complete list, just click here.

Q:  “Will my credits transfer to Harrison College?”

A:
They may! Just like all colleges, we would have to review your credits to see if the course you have completed covered the same material as the courses we teach. We will also look to see if you had the required grade for credits to transfer and that the credits are not over 10 years old. Now, here is where we differ from other colleges—we do this HAPPILY!

Q:  “Is Harrison College accredited?”

A:
YES! We are nationally accredited through Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) and recognized by the Career College Association (CCA).

Q:  “Do you have any student like me?”

A:
YES!  I always want to laugh when someone asks me this because that was maybe the biggest question that I had when I enrolled at Indiana Business College at almost 30 years old. It really doesn’t matter what age you are, if you have a high school diploma or a GED, if you work full time and have a family or if you are enrolling right out of high school—THERE ARE PEOPLE JUST LIKE YOU ATTENDING HARRISON COLLEGE!

5 Easy Steps to Reaching Your College Goal

Monday, August 10, 2009 by Jeanni Urbahns

Have you ever noticed how easily priorities can shift? Many of the priorities that make life so unpredictable are often pretty short-term.  For many years I lived with few long-term priorities.  Everything was based on how immediate the need or the need for a result. It wasn’t until I was nearing 30 when I realized that I wouldn’t get very far in life if I didn’t set my sights in the future and define my long-term priority as a GOAL.

For many adult education program students, earning a college degree is a goal that is often made more difficult by the short-term priorities.  After all, adult students often carry more responsibilities in day-to-day life. Here are some of my personal tips on making it to your goal of a college degree.

1.  Define Your Goal—Okay, a college degree is your goal, but not just any old degree will do. Examine what you want out of a degree. Is it a business marketing career, a career as a medical assistant, or maybe a vet tech career? Knowing where you want to end up is the best way to begin to find the right path.

2.  Find the Right College
—Every time you turn on the television or search the Internet you see ads for colleges—the hard part is knowing which one is right for you.  Look for those specializing in your end goal—that degree that is going to open doors into the career of your choice. Always check to make sure that the college is accredited. Although it is often confusing, don’t be confused by the fact that there are many different types of accreditation. Some schools are nationally accredited and others regionally while still others are accredited through professional associations. Check to make sure the colleges you are considering are recognized by the state and by the Department of Education if you want to get your monies worth in the end.

3.  Find the Right Learning Environment
—Once you narrow your search to just a few colleges, really take a hard look at yourself and honestly determine what environment allows you to learn best. For some, being in the classroom, face-to-face with a professor is the best while others learn well on their own through a distance learning format. Some enjoy being part of a large crowd while others are not comfortable being just a number in the masses. Your comfort level with the way your education is delivered is a key to starting and finishing your college degree program.

4.  Gather Your Resources
—Adult students must learn to always hope for the best but prepare for the worst. Line up backup babysitters for your backup babysitters. Get a city bus schedule just in case your car breaks down.  Get the buy-in of your family and friends. Also investigate the resources available through groups like First Call for Help and your college. Harrison College provides Student Resource Services to all of our students. From free legal assistance to stress management assistance, our students are given the tools to meet that end goal. Ask to see if the colleges you are interested in have something similar.

5.  Realize Time Passes More Quickly Than You Think
—Think of the time you have wasted on dead-end jobs. Add up the time you have spent doing things that have done nothing to provide you with career advancement. Compared to those things, two years to earn an Associate of Applied Science degree is a drop in the bucket. During that time you will be setting an example that will likely last for generations to come.

Make your extended family proud

Wednesday, July 22, 2009 by Elizabeth Nichols
In the past year and a half I have lost two aunts who were near and dear to me as well as the rest of my family. When I think of our loss, I am deeply saddened. But when I think of their lives and all they gave to me, I am thankful and I know I have been blessed by their presence in my life.

Helen Keller's view helps me: "All that we love deeply becomes a part of us."

What can be done to help deal with the loss? For me the answer is to live. Live so I honor their memory. Live so I am a blessing to others. Live to the fullest.

So I plan to take care of unfinished business. I am spending more time with family. I am working on my master's degree. I am spending more time petting my cats. I am saying no to more and yes to less; however, I am accomplishing more now than ever before.

What is your unfinished business?

Have you always wanted to go to school? Harrison College offers majors in six different areas: Health Sciences, Veterinary Technology, Business, Information Technology, Criminal Justice, and Chef's Academy. We offer an excellent adult education program, career advancement, certificate degrees, associate degrees, and bachelor degrees.

My coworkers are devoted and dedicated educational professionals. We believe our students can be successful....give us a chance to help you complete your unfinished business!

Monday, July 20, 2009 by Christina Bleeke
Hello everyone. Thank you to all of you who came out to see us this weekend at the Indiana Black Expo Career and Education Fair and Summer Celebration. It was a great weekend for Harrison College and we generated a lot of interest in our college.

This weekend there were many people who asked if Harrison College was new to Indianapolis which gave us an opportunity to let people know about our name change.  Harrison College was formerly Indiana Business College; the name change occurred in May.   The reason for the name change is that we now offer more degree programs than just in Business.  We have 5 schools: Health Sciences, Criminal Justice, Information Technology, Veterinary Technology, and Business.  We now offer Degrees in health care management, surgical technology degrees, veterinary technology training, and more.  Because of our growth and expansion we had out grown the name Indiana Business College.

We also had many questions about a physical therapy program. While we do not have a physical therapy program we do offer a therapeutic and clinical massage program.

Thank you again to all of you who came out to the Indiana Black Expo this weekend. If you would like more information on Harrison College you can visit our website at www.harrison.edu.
